Abstract

Unilateral testicular torsion was induced in male Sprague-Dawley rats to evaluate the effect on contralateral testis and then contralateral testis tissue was observed by light microscopic and electron microscopic examination.
The results were obtained as follows.
1) On light microscopic findings, proliferation of Leydig cells were not observed in the other groups compared with control group (group 1) and spermatogenesis were well preserved in all groups.
2) On electron microscopic findings, sequential differentiation of spermatozoa were well preserved in all groups.
3) But statistically significant decrease of mean seminiferous tubular diameter were observed in detorsion group (group 2) compared with control group (group 1), but not observed in oncciectomy group (group 3) and cyclosporin A injection group (group 5).
According to these findings, unilateral testicular torsion was no effect on contralateral testis of male Sprague-Dawley rats in this duration, but if experimental duration was prolonged I could expect that unilateral testicular torsion affect contralateral testis by immunologic mechanism.
